In the creation of this painting, I was heavily influenced by two American painters: Charles Scheeler and Charles Demuth. Both of these artists are typically linked to the style of art known as Precisionism. Precisionists would break down their compositions into simple shapes to highlight the geometric structures that could be found underneath and within an image. They also delineated their objects with clear outlines and solid smooth areas of color.

I tried my hand at creating my own precisionist artwork with an image I took at Twin Leaf Brewery located in Asheville, North Carolina. Every year, my husband and I travel to Asheville to explore and indulge in everything beer related. Unfortunately we didn’t get to go this year because ya know…Covid. Hopefully we’ll be able to get back there this year. *Fingers crossed*

I remember taking this picture of a fermenter because I loved the geometric planes, the way the light hit it, and its overall simplicity. Charles Scheeler painted a lot of images that showcased the changing American landscape through urban architecture and industrial buildings. The industrial nature of brewing equipment actually ties in quite nicely to the Precisionist movement and its principles. Maybe I should ask around our local breweries and see about capturing their inner workings from a TMG point of view. Things to think about.
