Owl in Profile
Oil on Canvas
18” x 24” - 2014
From October 2013 to October 2014, I took part in a self-initiated daily art project entitled The Nightly Owl. My goal was to jumpstart my art making and improve my creative problem solving skills by making something everyday for a whole year. I was inspired by the Richmond based artist, Noah Scalin, who completed a year long daily art project of skulls. The image of the owl eventually became the constant in my project while the media I created in was the variable.
Throughout this year long journey, I experimented with many different art media, both traditional and not. I decided to test the uncharted waters of oil paint and enrolled myself in a painting class, at Liberty Town in Fredericksburg, taught by Bill Harris. Owl In Profile was finished a couple months after I completed my coursework with him. This painting has since been acquired and lives on somewhere in the world.
Since my first exposure to oil paint in 2014, I’ve continued to experiment, create, and learn. In 2018, I took another painting class. This time with artist Milena Spasic at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA. Milena challenged me to work beyond my barriers, test out new techniques, and find my own visual voice. I’m thankful for all the knowledge both Bill and Milena have imparted onto me and utilize it in my current creations.
Below are a few examples from my 365 journey.
