Margaret Brent Elementary School Historic Mindset Mural - by Tanya M. Green, 2021
ABOUT THE MURAL
This mural was conceptualized in collaboration with the administrators at Margaret Brent Elementary and myself. We wanted a mural that would emphasize prominent figures in Stafford’s history along side growth mindset words. Margaret Brent, George Washington, Pocahontas, George Mason, and Clara Barton (from left to right) have ties to Stafford history as well as 4th grade Virginia Standards of Learning. Our vision was to create a mural that teachers could use in an interactive way with their students. Students can make connections between a growth mindset word and how one of the figures displayed that attribute in their lives. Some of the growth mindset words include “Grit, Effort, Collaboration, and Courage.” There’s also a map of Stafford in the background which connects these figures directly to the community the students are a part of.
The mural is approximately 23 feet wide by 8 feet tall. It is one of 11 historic Stafford murals being funded by the Stafford Education Foundation and the Stafford Museum and Cultural Center to celebrate and build community awareness of local history in Stafford County Public Schools.
Because the mural is so large, here is an additional picture with me in it. It really helps you see the scale of the work.
