I got the idea to paint a skull from Day 5 of #anatober : I really love skulls and have a healthy adoration of them. Actually, there was a point in my past when I used to look at people, analyze their facial structure, and try to envision what their skull looked like. My intrigue was strictly from an artist’s viewpoint of analyzing anatomy. Don’t worry. I haven’t done that in a long time. If I do get to see you in person someday, just know that I’m not looking at your skull.
For this study, I set up one of my skulls and photographed it. I wanted to play with color this go around and started with a complementary color palette of magenta and yellow-green. I wasn’t satisfied with how it was going, so I changed directions and settled on a triadic color palette. I also tried to only use one paintbrush to render this painting. My thoughts were that it might loosen my brushstrokes up and keep me from getting too detailed. I used a 3/8” flat brush for this work. All in all, I’m pleased with the way it turned out.
