Spring brings with it warmer weather and many beautiful flowers. Lately, I’ve been drawn to lots of flower pictures for inspiration. Some are from my own collection of photos. Others, like this painting, are inspired by local photographers who can capture our Fredericksburg area so beautifully.

I saw a photo of irises posted in “On the Fredericksburg Trails” Facebook page by Rebecca Blackwell. I asked her if I could use it as a reference and was pleased when she gave me the go ahead. I was drawn to the way the purple was emphasized against the beautiful warm and cool greens. The repetition of the fence created a consistent geometric rhythm that harmoniously juxtaposed the organic bends and curves of the flowers. I couldn’t wait to get started.

My approach to this painting was a bit different than my other ones. I did a sketch to figure out my composition first, then I began to paint. I played around with different textural techniques in this one. (Specifically in the fence posts and the ground) Actually the ground may be my favorite part of this painting. I just love the ground!
